TWELVE SAN FRANCISCO BOWL GAME PLAYERS
SELECTED BY NFL TEAMS IN 2013 DRAFT
SAN FRANCISCO - National Football League teams selected 12 players in the 2013 NFL Draft who at one time participated in San Francisco's college bowl game. The contests include both the Emerald & Kraft Fight Hunger Bowls.
The first S.F. `graduate' to come off the board was UCLA DT Datone Jones, taken by the Green Bay Packers with the 26th selection of the 1st round on Thursday evening. Jones had 1.5 tackles in the Bruins 20-14 loss to Illinois in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.
Next to go was USC FS Tevin McDonald, a Friday 3rd round selection [71st] of the St. Louis Rams. McDonald played special teams and reserve safety as a freshman in the 2009 Emerald Bowl.
Illinois OL Hugh Thornton was selected by the Indianapolis Colts on the 3rd round, the 86th overall selection.
The third-day 4th [of 7] draft round, held today, saw USC QB Matt Barkley, who played in the 2009 Emerald Bowl as a freshman, go to the Philadelphia Eagles with the opening pick of the round, 98th overall. Barkley was 27-of-32 for 350 yards and 2 TDs in the Trojans 24-13 win over Boston College four years ago.
Illinois DT Akeem Spence was chosen on the 4th round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who acquired the pick, No. 100 overall, from the Oakland Raiders. Spence had 0.5 sacks and 0.5 TFL in the win over the Bruins.
The 3rd 4th rounder tapped, SS Duke Williams of Nevada, was selected 105th overall by the Buffalo Bills. Williams had 6 tackles and 1 pass breakup in the Wolf Pack's victory over Boston College in the 2010 bowl season.
Green Bay selected its second UCLA player when the Packers went for RB Johnathan Franklin [125th overall] in the 4th round. Franklin ended his Bruins career as the school's alltime leading rusher, with 4,535 yards, including 1,734 as a senior.
The 5th round produced two more S.F.-related draftees. They are UCLA P Jeff Locke and Illinois FS Terry Hawthorne.
Hawthorne [150th overall] was named the 2011 game's Outstanding Defensive Player for the Illini and returned an interception 39 yards for a score to pace the Illinois win. Locke in that game booted 8 times for a 45.8 average with 3 kicks inside the 20.
UCLA G Jeff Baca [196th] went to the Minnesota Vikings on the 6th round.
Nevada CB Khalid Wooten [202nd] moved to the Tennessee Titans, also on the 6th round. Wooten had an INT for Nevada in the 2010 game.
On the 7th round, the New England Patriots selected Illinois DE Michael Buchanan [226th]. Against UCLA in '11, Buchanan notched 3 tackles, a sack, a TFL and fumble recovery.
